Two recent alarming recalls have been related to defibrillators and heart stents, both of which affect the heart.
A defibrillator is a small device which is implanted into a patient’s chest and releases electricity to shock the heart, in a situation in which a person has an irregular heart beat that needs to be stabilized. Due to an internal short circuit, certain defibrillators may either fail to deliver a shock to the heart when needed or, deliver a shock to the heart when not needed. One of the recently recalled models is the Guidant Ventak Prizm 2 Model 1861 defibrillator, although many others have been known to be defective and pose serious threats to patients.
A heart stent is a tiny plastic tube or mesh wire, which is used to allow blood vessels and arteries to stay open after certain surgical procedures. It has become routine for many surgery patients to be implanted with permanent drug coated stents to prevent scarring of the arteries, as well as to prevent the arteries from narrowing. Defective and dangerous stents which have been recalled place patients at risk for serious injuries, including heart attacks, tears in the arteries, and rupturing of the blood vessels.
